I need a Kids ministry discussion going on here.
How often do you ask your volunteers to serve and why?

What are you doing and why?

For us it depends on what role. We expect our small group leaders to server every week. We have multiple services, so they don’t have to miss the adult service. Leaders (people who are leading other volunteers) generally serve every week as well. However, most volunteers serve every other week. I’ve found that volunteers who can only commit to one weekend a month generally are not dependable. They often forget and rarely value the commitment. Some of the people I really respect in ministry really encourage moving all teams toward a serve every week model. I’m in love with the idea and I understand that you’ll need less people to pull that off, but finding people willing to commit to that schedule is HARD to do! I’ll be interested to other people’s thoughts.

Most of our volunteers are weekend. So we get them to serve one service a weekend.
This is the same for pretty much all of the volunteers across church life.

We ask volunteers to work every week in the area the sign-up for. With three Sunday morning services, they shouldn’t have a problem getting to Main Worship service.
But I have to admit that I still have a few every-other-week volunteers…

Right now I am SUPPOSED to be serving every week. Frankly, I find it challenging partly b/c our church day is also Terry’s only day off. So when we need to we attend the internet campus and I feel crazy guilty for not being able to serve.
Part of this could be helped by an every other week gig for me. Then I could do more planning around it. As it sits, there is no weekend that I am already “off”, so I just miss whenever it comes up. Lately, it’s been a lot.
I’ve already told Toni I probably need to step down. She talked me out of it. =) She may fire me soon if I’m not careful.

PS I understand the importance of every week, but I don’t know how realistic it is for most people.

We have some postitions that require serving every week. We are moving toward that for our entire ministry. I think I will wind up leaving Check-in open for every-other-week. But other than a very, very rare exception, we will require every week. I will steer volunteers toward another one of our great ministry opportunities if they cannot commit to every week. My belief is that it is much better for the kids and the parents to get to know the volunteer and have a consistent person each week. It builds trust and facilitates a fantastic experience for the little ones. Time and again, I hear from parents who really are glad that a certain volunteer serves in their child’s room. It instantly puts them at ease to see the same faces each week and allows them to really attend the worship experience free of worry or concern about the happiness and enjoyment of thier little ones.
